Should the Brewers trade Jonathan Villar?

In a season full of struggles and defeat, one bright spot for the Milwaukee Brewers has been shortstop Jonathan Villar.

In his first season with the Brewers, after being acquired this past offseason from the Houston Astros, Villar is batting .286 with 156 hits, 16 home runs and 56 RBIs in 626 at-bats. In 144 games, he’s also tallied 56 stolen bases in 72 attempts.

He’s having a career year. At only 25 years old, Villar appears to have star potential written all over him. Villar’s stats combined with his huge up-side make his trade value higher than it’s ever been before. Due to these two factors, should the Brewers consider trading Villar?

With a farm system filled with middle infield talent and Orlando Arcia pegged as the shortstop of the future, it’s an option worth exploring this offseason.

The Brewers lack quality pitching prospects, including not having a single pitching prospect with No. 1 starter potential. If the Brewers can net a package featuring a high level pitching prospect in return for Villar, it’s a move they have to make.

In order to receive talent, teams have to give up talent. If the Brewers want to do this rebuild the right way, they need to explore trading Villar this offseason to continue to add quality prospect to their farm system.
