Tristen Lutz is a rising prep outfield prospect from Texas, who has a shot at hearing his name called in the first-round of June’s MLB First-Year Player Draft.

MLB.com ranks Lutz as the 34th-best prospect in the MLB Draft, which begins on June 12. Lutz worked out for teams last fall, but hasn’t had any pre-draft workouts this spring, he said.

“That is something I knew I’d have to deal with,” said Lutz about the draft. “I knew I wouldn’t worry about it and just worry about my season and winning state.”

A 6-foot-3, 210-pound centerfield from Martin High School in Texas, Lutz’s top trait is his notable right-handed power. He also has good pitch recognition and is capable of using the whole field.

Lutz spent the off-season improving his defense, specifically his outfield reads and routes. He is pleased with his progress defensively this spring.

“I believe my reads have improved through practice and then into games,” said Lutz, who’s high school team is in the fourth-round of the state baseball tournament.

Lutz will have a difficult decision to make after the draft. A potential first-round pick, Lutz will have to decide between turning pro and attending the University of Texas as a student-athlete, beginning this fall.

“I don’t have any problems going to school,” Lutz said. “Texas is a great opportunity and my dream school.”
