Red Sox call up Mookie Betts

From winning a World Series championship to now sitting near the bottom of the American League East, the Boston Red Sox are searching for players to help them return to playing October baseball this season.  The Red Sox are now turning to top prospect Mookie Betts according to John Tomase of the Boston Herald.

Betts, 21, is a second baseman and outfielder that was drafted by Boston in the fifth round in 2011.  He has quickly moved through the minor leagues, while being regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball.

MLB.com ranks Betts as the No. 51 prospect in baseball, while Baseball America has him at No. 75.  Betts is known for his excellent speed and athleticism while having solid plate discipline.

This season Betts has done an exceptional job at the plate hitting .345 with eight home runs and 48 run batted in 59 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.

With former AL MVP Dustin Pedroia manning second base it is likely the Red Sox will find time for Betts in the outfield.  Wherever the Sox decide to put Betts, he needs to come in and provide the team with a spark offensively as they rank near the bottom in most team offensive categories in baseball.
