Phillies select prep outfielder Mickey Moniak

After months of speculation, the Philadelphia Phillies have selected California prep outfielder Mickey Moniak with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

A 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-handed swinging centerfielder, Moniak is a line drive hitter who uses the entire field and consistently makes hard contact. While he has more doubles power right now, he has room to grow and add strength.

Moniak also has above-average speed that works on both sides of the ball, which should allow him to stick in centerfield.

Florida left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk and Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis were potential options at the No. 1 overall pick, but the Phillies opted for the top prep position player in the 2016 draft class.
