Panthers win on the road

As the soccer season continues to move along, you have to wonder how much longer the Milwaukee Panthers can continue to play at such a high level? After a slow start, the Milwaukee Panthers were able to come from behind and get the 3-1 victory on the road against the Omaha Mavericks.

Both teams got off to a slow start, and it was not until the 42nd minute that either team scored a goal. The Mavericks got on the board first with a penalty kick, and would hold the 1-0 lead into halftime. This was only the second time the Panthers (8-0-1) had trailed all season, and the first time trailing at halftime.

Although the Panthers got off to a slow start, they came out in the second half and completely dominated the Mavericks. Laurie Bell got the Panthers on the board in the 66th minute with a penalty kick of his own, for his sixth goal of the season to tie the score up at one apiece.

Milwaukee added on quickly. In the 70th minute Aaron Horvat received the pass from Laurie Bell, as he broke away from the defense, and was able to find the back of the net to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead.

It only took Milwaukee five more minutes, until they were celebrating another goal. James Ashcroft returned to the starting lineup tonight, and showed why he was a preseason All-Horizon First Team selection. Not only did he play solid defense, but he also capped off the scoring for the Panthers on a tough angle goal from the right sideline to give them a 3-1 lead.

Even with Milwaukee’s slow start, they outshot Omaha 15-9, and had the advantage in shots on goal (8-4). It may not have been pretty in the beginning, but the Panthers found away to come from behind and continue their winning ways.

Up next the Panthers will resume Horizon League action as they take on Wright State at home on Saturday. The Raiders are 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference, but they are only 1-3-1 on the road. This will be a fun and competitive matchup, but Milwaukee’s home field advantage will be the difference in this Horizon League contest.
