Packers should take a flyer on DeAndre Levy

After signing a pair of tight ends in Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks, it’s time for the Green Bay Packers to address holes on the defensive side of the football. One player the Packers should take a chance on is free agent middle linebacker DeAndre Levy.

A Milwaukee native, Levy played collegiately at Wisconsin before spending the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Detroit Lions, who released him on March 9.

Levy, 29, has played in just six games the last two seasons, missing all of 2015 with a hip injury and most of last season with a knee injury. His inability to perform the last two seasons, made his $8.39 million cap hit for the upcoming season higher than his current value.

Even with his recent injury history, Levy is worth taking a flyer on.

Prior to his injuries, Levy was one of the top middle linebackers in football. In 2014, he finished second in the NFL with 151 tackles and was a Pro Bowl-caliber linebacker, playing in all 16 games.

While a lot depends on his health, the Packers should entertain the idea of signing Levy. It would be a low-risk move with the potential to turn into a massive pay off, if Levy returns to anywhere near his 2014 form.
