The 3rd Man In

Milwaukee Panthers Women’s Sports Roundup

Playing two games a week has become an ordinary thing for the Milwaukee Panthers women’s basketball squad, and this past week they played two games once again, as they looked to pickup two important nonconference victories on their home court.

Milwaukee began their week with an impressive 72-63 victory over Eastern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon at the historic UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

Defense was key for the Panthers, as they forced 28 turnovers and used a 22-0 scoring run over a 12-minute span to build a 21-point lead in the second half.

Jenny Lindner scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Panthers, while Ashley Green was right behind her, adding 18. Green also recorded eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Jordyn Swan also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points on the afternoon.

This was an excellent bounce back performance by the Panthers after their crushing defeat to Omaha on a buzzer beater on December 7. Milwaukee needed to win this game, especially with the challenging Indiana Hoosiers up next on their schedule.

On Sunday, the Panthers welcomed the one loss Hoosiers to the Klotsche Center. Despite the Hoosiers obviously being a more talented team, the Panthers battled through the entire 40 minutes of play.

Unfortunately, Indiana was able to go on a big second half scoring run to beat Milwaukee, 82-56.

Once again, Lindner had a productive offensive day, scoring a team-high 18 points, while Green chipped in 14 points and Jalessa Armstrong added 10.

After a strong defensive performance against Eastern Illinois, the Panthers’ defense was unable to slow down the Hoosier offensive attack, allowing them to hit 55.7 percent (43-61) of their shots.

Milwaukee had to play a near-perfect game just to have a shot at beating Indiana, and it isn’t surprising seeing them fall to one of the better teams in the country. However, the positive to take away from this game is that they fought and battled the entire game no matter how many points they trailed by. That is a sign of a good team, who is willing to do anything to win despite the obstacles in front of them.

With final exams, the Panthers will be off until Sunday when they look to return to winning ways against Chicago State at the Klotsche Center with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
