Milwaukee Panthers Women’s Sports Roundup

With winter almost here, the fall sports season is coming to a close. The women’s soccer team has been done for a week, and the Milwaukee Panthers volleyball team is nearly done with their regular season schedule. Now that it is November, the women’s basketball team has began their season with an exhibition contest this past week.

It was a busy week for the Panthers volleyball squad, who competed in three matches over the course of five days at home.

Last Tuesday the Panthers went head-to-head against crosstown rival Marquette. The Golden Eagles are a solid team, and they showed that against the Panthers, winning in three straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-16).

Marquette went on some big scoring runs, while doing an excellent job at blocking the ball to help give them the nonconference victory over Milwaukee.

Julie Kolinske led the Panthers with 13 kills, while Taylor Golabowski registered a match-high 17 digs. Kayla Price recorded 33 assists.

This was a tough defeat, but Milwaukee was able to come back on Friday and perform much better as they returned to Horizon League action.

Kolinske tallied a match-high 20 kills to help push the Panthers past the Youngstown State Penguins in four sets (25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22).

Three other Milwaukee players were also in double figures in kills. Myanna Ruiz had 15, while Maggie Dunbar added 14 and Hannah Blanchard 10. Price had another excellent performance recording an unbelievable 59 assists to go along with 11 digs. Golabowski (15) and Maddie Schmitz (10) finished in double figures in digs.

This was a close match besides the first set, and Milwaukee did a great job fighting until the end and finishing off the Penguins.

However, the Panthers were unsuccessful at carrying this momentum over into their Saturday match against a mediocre Cleveland State squad. The Panthers struggled committing 33 attack errors in the match as they fell to the Vikings in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25).

Despite the loss on Senior Day, Kolinske had another solid effort, registering 12 kills.

This was a tough match for the Panthers as the Vikings came to play. Cleveland State made some impressive plays, and were able to take advantage on the Panthers’ mistakes.

Milwaukee will be fine though, but now they will have to play well in their final week of the regular season as they dropped a game behind Oakland for the first spot in the standings.

This week the Panthers will play two matches on the road, first beginning with the Golden Grizzlies on Friday before heading to play Wright State on Saturday.

If the Panthers can win both games they will at least clinch a share of the regular season title. If not, they will finish second in the league.

With winter fast approaching and the fall athletic season nearly over, college basketball is finally back. The women’s basketball team played their lone exhibition game of the season, destroying Southwest Minnesota State 87-48 this past Sunday.

Jordyn Swan topped five players in double figures with 20 points, shooting 80 percent from the field. Ashley Green was not to far behind, tallying 18 points on the afternoon.

Milwaukee completely dominated this exhibition contest, never trailing against SWMU.

The Panthers will open their season on November 16 on the road in Fargo, N.D. against North Dakota State with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to listen to this game on the radio (1130 WISN).

It was a challenging week for the volleyball team, but they have had an outstanding season so far. This is going to be an extremely important week for them, and hopefully they can pull through and win both matches. The women’s basketball team looked impressive in their exhibition game, and although it is doesn’t count towards anything, hopefully they can carry that performance over into their season opener.

Stay tuned next week for the twelfth edition of the Milwaukee Panthers Women’s Sports Roundup to be up to date on everything happening with these two successful programs.
