Milwaukee Panthers Fall Sports Roundup

Here’s a recap of your Milwaukee Panthers in action this past week. United We Roar!

Women’s Soccer: The Panthers split their two matches last week, picking up their first Horizon League victory of the season against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and then dropping a nonconference contest against Loyola.

The Panthers traveled to Rochester, Mich. for a conference showdown against the Golden Grizzlies on Friday. Junior midfielder Maria Stephans netted two goals including the game winner in overtime to send Milwaukee past Oakland, 2-1.

It was not until the 86th minute that the Panthers finally got on the board, scoring on a penalty kick. Stephans then registered her second goal in the 96th minute after she dribbled through traffic and found the back of the net.

In a back-and-fourth contest that saw three lead changes, the Panthers came up just short against the Loyola Ramblers, suffering a 3-2 defeat on Sunday.

Milwaukee netted two goals in the first 13 minutes, but they failed to get one past the goalkeeper the remainder of the game, despite some close chances.

The Panthers (4-3-1) have two matches this week. First, they will face crosstown rival Marquette on Wednesday at home before squaring off against Wright State on Saturday in Dayton, Ohio.

Volleyball: It has been a tough stretch for the volleyball squad, as they have failed to win a match since the end of August when they started the season 2-0.

It didn’t get any easier for Milwaukee this past week as they dropped matches against Lipscomb and Northwestern in the Wildcat Challenge to extend their losing streak to 10 games.

The Panthers (2-10) will open Horizon League action this week with three matches on the road beginning on Thursday against Oakland before traveling to Ohio for weekend contests against Youngstown State and Cleveland State.

Men’s Soccer: The Panthers returned to winning ways with a 1-0 double-overtime victory against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in their first Horizon League contest of the season.

This was a back-and-fourth battle between two even teams, and it was not until the 107th minute that freshman midfielder Francesco Saporito finally scored the game winner against the defending Horizon League champions.

Senior goalkeeper Agustin Rey made two saves to record his first collegiate shutout.

Milwaukee (2-4-1) now is off until Sunday when they play a home contest against the tough UIC Flames, with game time set for 7 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium.
