Milwaukee Panthers Fall Sports Roundup

Here’s a recap of your Milwaukee Panthers in action this past week. United We Roar!

Women’s Soccer: Despite trailing at halftime, the Milwaukee Panthers walked away victorious after second half goals by freshmen Kelli Swenson and Lourdes Onwuemeka against Northern Illinois at the NIU Soccer Complex on a humid Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies jumped onto the scoreboard early with a goal in the 17th minute. It was a rather even contest the remainder of the first half, with Milwaukee just edging NIU in shots 6-4.

In the second half however, the Panthers came out with more energy and fight, registering eight of the 10 shots in the final 45 minutes of play.

Milwaukee tied the contest up in the 53rd minute after Onwuemeka rebounded the ball off of senior Kelsey Holbert’s shot and found the back of the net from five yards out.

Swenson then scored the eventual game winner at the 79:46 mark after heading the ball past the Huskie keeper off of a free kick by Onwuemeka.

This win now puts Milwaukee (2-2-0) back at the .500 mark, with a highly anticipated matchup against instate rival Wisconsin on Friday evening at classic Engelmann Stadium. They then will hit the road for a Sunday contest against Chicago State.

Volleyball: It was a disappointing week for the volleyball squad, who dropped all four matches, extending their losing streak to five games.

They began the week with a road contest against the sizzling Northern Illinois Huskies, falling in four sets.

The Panthers struggled mightily offensively, hitting only 0.063 percent. Junior Taylor Mansfield was the only one to register double digit kills, tallying 11 in the match.

Following this defeat, the Panthers spent the weekend in Fargo, N.D. participating in the Baymont Inn and Suites Classic. In their first match they dropped three close sets to Utah Valley on Friday evening. They then fell to Towson 3-1 and North Dakota State 3-2 on Saturday.

Milwaukee battled against the hosting Bison, remaining in each set until the very end. In the fifth set they came back twice and even led before falling to North Dakota State 15-13.

Things don’t get any easier for the Panthers (2-5), who participate in the Hawkeye Challenge this upcoming weekend facing three high-major programs in Iowa, Texas A&M and Iowa State.

Men’s Soccer: The Milwaukee Panthers and Marquette Golden Eagles went back-and-forth the entire game, but neither team found away to break through, settling for a 1-1 draw in the annual crosstown battle for the prestigious Milwaukee Cup at Engelmann Stadium in front of a record setting crowd of over 4,000 fans on Thursday.

Freshman Tinashe Marowa scored in the 22nd minute to put the Panthers ahead early after going one-on-one against the Marquette keeper and sending the ball low and inside the near post.

It was then not until the 73rd minute that Marquette would score the equalizer off of a goal by Louis Bennett II.

This was just the fourth time in the all-time series that the Milwaukee Cup ended in a tie. The Panthers now lead the series 28-11-4.

Milwaukee keeper Agustin Rey had a big night in goal, registering six saves.

Both teams finished tied with 17 shots and seven corner shots apiece, while Marquette held the sight edge in shots on goal, 7-6.

Following this battle, the Panthers took a short road trip and headed to Peoria, Ill. to face Bradley on Sunday afternoon.

It was another close game that came down to the wire, but unfortunately Milwaukee suffered a defeat after a goal in the 87th minute on a bicycle kick from short distance by Bradley.

The Panthers held a slight advantage in shots, 15-13, while Bradley registered 10 corner kicks compared to eight by Milwaukee.

Up next the Panthers (1-2-1) will participate in the Gonzaga Classic in Spokane, Wash. next weekend when they face Houston Baptist on Friday before playing Gonzaga on Sunday.
