Brewers, Mets trade falls apart

July 29 at 8:42 p.m. CST: With the MLB Trade Deadline only days away, the Milwaukee Brewers have traded center fielder Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets for right-hander Zack Wheeler and shortstop Wilmer Flores according to reports.

Wheeler, 25, is a former first round pick by the Giants in 2009 and was a big pitching prospect coming up through the minor league system. He was expected to be in the Mets’ starting rotation this season, but underwent Tommy John surgery in March.

The young hurler has a 3.50 ERA and 270 strikeouts in 285 1/3 career major league innings.

Flores, 23, has the ability to play second and third base along with shortstop and has shown glimpses of being a solid big leaguer.

In 92 games this season Flores is hitting .250 with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and a .282 on-base percentage. He has committed 10 errors this season defensively while spending the majority of his time at shortstop.
