The 3rd Man In

Milwaukee and Creighton end in 0-0 draw

Just days after the season officially got underway the Milwaukee Panthers men’s soccer team suited up for an exhibition contest against Creighton University Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.

Both programs are coming off a NCAA tournament appearance in 2013, and are expected to be dancing again, each receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25. It was a back in forth game, but neither team was able to find the back of the net as it ended in a 0-0 tie, with no overtime being played.

Scoring opportunities came at a premium for the Panthers. Senior All-American midfielder Laurie Bell was able to record the only three shots on goal for Milwaukee in the 90 minutes of action.

Creighton on the other hand had their chances, but Milwaukee’s goalies were able to hold the Bluejays off the board. Liam Anderson and Agustin Rey split time in goal for the Panthers, and did an outstanding job combining to make nine saves against the Bluejays offensive attack.

Creighton held a 16-8 advantage on shots, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Both team recorded six corner kicks, while Milwaukee was called for 15 fouls compared to only 11 for the visiting Bluejays.

With many new faces on this year’s squad, this was an excellent way for the Panthers to get experience while facing a tough opponent. Creighton is one of the better teams in the country, and to have the final buzzer sound at 0-0 while staying injury free was a great result.

Sure the Panthers have some things to work on, but with the season only being a few days old it is hard to complain about the way they played.

Milwaukee will play their next and final exhibition games on Thursday against UW-Parkside with the game getting underway at 5 p.m. CT at Engelmann Stadium.
