Many positives come out of Panther scrimmage

Passionate Milwaukee Panther fans filed into the Klotsche Center to watch the Milwaukee Panthers men’s basketball team hold their annual intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday evening.

It was an exciting event, as fans were able to enjoy food and refreshments, while getting a sneak peak at the 2014-15 Panthers basketball squad.

Junior Trinson White displayed outstanding athleticism, playing well on both sides of the ball. Although it is only a scrimmage, White was aggressive offensively making nice moves in the paint, and getting to the hoop with ease. Defensively, he was all over the court, contesting shots while dominating the boards.

White finished the scrimmage scoring 20 points to go along with 14 rebounds.

Fans were also able to finally see the highly anticipated freshman guard, Justin Jordan, in action. He didn’t blowup the stat sheet, but he showed flashes of excellence, making some impressive passes, while making a contested three-point shot.

Sophomore Akeem Springs also statistically had a good showing recording 15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. However, he needs to be a bit more consistent from the field. This shouldn’t be a problem because of his experience in the college game, but there were a few times that he made some questionable decisions with passing and shooting the ball.

Austin Arians has shown throughout his first two seasons with the Panthers that he is a solid three-point shooter, and on Tuesday evening fans were able to witnesses Arians make some incredible three-point shots. Arians was attempting and even making some three-pointers from NBA range.

He was able to finish the evening with 15 points. If he can continue to develop his shot along with a bit more consistency, he is going to have an outstanding junior season wearing the Black and Gold.

JeVon Lyle also played well offensively hitting 8 of 12 shots from the field, tallying 19 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals on the night. Alex Prahl, Matt Tiby and J.J. Panoske also finished in double figures in scoring.

This was an exciting night as the start of the college basketball season quickly approaches. The Panthers are deep with talented guards from returning players such as Steve McWhorter and Lyle to newcomers like Jordan and Springs. This will be the strength of their team this season, which is key in a smaller, more guard oriented league like the Horizon League.

While it is only a scrimmage, the Panthers looked good as a team. Of course they still have some room to grow and develop, but right now head coach Rob Jeter looks like he has his team in a good position to be competitive this year.

If you missed the Panther scrimmage don’t worry because the Panthers will return to action in only a few weeks when they play an exhibition contest against Platteville at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena on November 6.
