The 3rd Man In

LeWang Trophy is returning to Milwaukee

With the rain coming down, this game ended up being closer than many people thought. The Milwaukee Panthers (12-2-2) knocked off Northern Illinois University (4-11) 1-0, to hold onto the LeWang Trophy for a third straight season.

In the first period neither team was really able to do a whole lot. Both teams each had three shots, but none of them turned into goals. The beginning of the second half was the same story, as it was not until there was 16 minutes remaining in the game that the Panthers were finally able to score.

Laurie Bell scored the lone goal in the 74th minute, for his 11th goal of the season. Bell received the ball after Kostas Kotselas won the ball near the top of the 18-yard box. Bell then one timed it to the back of the net, for the game winner.

Goalie Liam Anderson recorded his seventh shutout of the season with four saves on the night. One thing that was a surprise was that the Huskies finished the game with more shots (9-7) and corner kicks (4-3). The weather could have been a factor, as Milwaukee has had a dominant offense all season.

The Panthers will now be off until November 9th when they face Cleveland State (7-10, 3-2) at home at seven o’clock, in what will be Senior Day. This will be the final regular season game for both teams, as Cleveland State is currently in fourth place and Milwaukee is in second place in the Horizon League. This will be a big game for both teams, right before they get ready for conference tournament action.
