Kendrys Morales signs with the Twins

Free agent first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales has finally reached an agreement with a new team. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Minnesota Twins have signed the veteran slugger to a one-year, $12 million prorated contract worth roughly $7.6 million.

Morales, 30, was a free agent this past offseason but he was unable to come to terms on a deal with a team after he declined the Seattle Mariners qualifying offer. Had another team signed him prior to the First-Year Player Draft, they would have lost a pick in the draft, but since the draft is underway, the Twins will not surrender a pick.

The news that Morales will sign with the Twins is shocking as the Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees were the only teams know to be interested in him.

In Minnesota, Morales is likely to see a majority of his time at DH as the Twins look to make a run in the tight American League Central.

Last season Morales hit .277 with 23 home runs and 80 RBIs with the Mariners. He is a career .280-hitter with 102 home runs and 345 RBIs in 620 games.

While the Brewers were not expected to be huge contenders for Morales’ services due to the financial aspect, he still would have been a great fit for their ball club. Now with Morales off the board it should be interesting to see if they address their first base situation in any other way.
