Future is bright for Andres Santana

Andres Santana

Andres Santana is a skilled and underrated senior high school outfielder from Miami. Committed to Florida International University, Santana is also drawing interest from professional teams for the upcoming MLB First-Year Player Draft, which begins on June 12.

Ranked by Baseball America as the 82nd-best prep prospect in June’s MLB Draft, Santana is eager for the opportunity to potentially follow his dream.

Santana also knows deciding between college and professional baseball won’t be easy, as both routes are attractive to him, he said.

“Growing up as a kid you thought that it was something huge,” Santana said. “Once you’re living it, it’s like a dream come true. Growing up the last few years, I’ve felt comfortable playing in front of scouts. It’s something that feels natural now. I can see it as my job now.”

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder, Santana is strong and athletic, possessing the tools that make him an intriguing player on both sides of the ball.

“I’ve always been a hitter growing up. It’s been my main tool,” Santana said. “What has made me successful has been (being) able to barrel up guys and any kind of pitching. It has really gotten me success.”

Although Santana has speed and a strong arm, it wasn’t until last year that he started playing in the outfield. He grew up playing shortstop and third base, but is happy he switched positions.

“Since I was small, I’ve been an infielder,” Santana said. “I really started playing outfield last year in my junior year. I’ve been improving in centerfield and getting better. I’m a lot better from this summer.

“I’ve trained with a couple of pro guys, including Jose Guillen, and said I should play in the outfield. I feel comfortable.”

For the 2016-2017 school year, Santana transferred to Doral Academy in hopes of having more success personally and as a team.

“My first goal is to win,” Santana said. “I’ve never made it to the state championship. Be myself and just hit. With the attention from the scouts, I just want to have fun and enjoy my senior year. Everything is just going to come in place.”
