The 3rd Man In

Buzz Williams is leaving Marquette

Buzz Williams is moving on from Marquette after a disappointing 17-15 season that left the Golden Eagles out of postseason action.  Williams will sign a seven-year contract to become the new head coach at Virginia Tech according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

The seven-year deal is expected to be worth almost $18 million.  In William’s first season he will make $2.3 million, which will be significantly less than his $3 million annual salary at Marquette.

Williams, 41, led Marquette to five NCAA tournament berths in six seasons after taking over for Tom Crean who left for Indiana, while compiling a 139-65 record in that time.

It should be interesting to see if any players transfer, and who the Golden Eagles will target as their next head coach.  Saul Phillips? Tommy Amaker? Rob Jeter?
