Brewers officially name Opening Day starter

Brewers Junior Guerra

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Junior Guerra is officially the Opening Day starter, the team announced on Saturday. The Brewers season opens against the Colorado Rockies at home on April 3.

As a 31-year-old rookie in 2016, Guerra opened people’s eyes with his performance. Claimed off waivers by the Brewers before last season, Guerra posted a 2.81 ERA, going 9-3 with 100 strikeouts in 20 starts.

Guerra missed most of last August with an elbow injury, but returned in September to make three starts, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.88 ERA to end the season.

Guerra is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and six strikeouts in 10 innings this spring.

Expect Zach Davies, Jimmy Nelson, Wily Peralta and Matt Garza to fill out the rest of the Brewers starting rotation to begin the 2017 season.
